As we enter the 21st Century, the extent of science & technology a nation possess is becoming a measuring rod for a country's competitiveness and power in turbulent times, as it surpasses the concept of a country in the area of science technology along with information science.
It is a known fact that mathematics is the instrumental science essential for the research and development of science, and in present times when the paradigm of the industry is rapidly transitioning to an information society, the importance of mathematic is emphasized more than ever before. In addition, the area of mathematics must also be preceded by taking in such changes and demands, and improving its system as required by the new era.
In order to engage in research cooperation in and outside if the country, and systematic support activities on untapped research personnel in the university in the area of pure and applied
mathematics, the purpose of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences is as follows:
Establishment of new theories on various areas of mathematics and establishment of connection with other sciences
Playing the role of a mathematics information center that must actively attract research funds from government institutions and industries, and which must be held by a nation.
Contribution to the growth of mathematics in Korea of the 21st Century through absorption and fostering of excellent human resources
