The Department of Japanese Language and Literature conducts research on and teaches Japanese language, literature, and Japanese studies related on them. The Department of Japanese Language and Literature of Pusan National University was established in 1980, with the aim of conducting research and providing education on Japanese literature and language. The department operates Japanese Language and Japanese Literature Majors, and the graduate school of Japanese Language and Literature operates both Master’s and Ph.D. programs. The curriculum in the freshman and sophomore years focuses on the acquisition of basic Japanese skills, while the curriculum in the junior and senior years requires more specialized and intensive study. The graduate programs include Japanese Linguistics and Japanese Literature Majors. The Japanese Linguistics programs include Japanese Grammar, Phonology, Lexis, and Contrastive Study, while the Japanese Literature programs include Ancient Literature, Japanese Literature of the Heian Period, Japanese Literature of the Middle Ages, and Japanese Literature of the Modern Ages, in order to provide an advanced academic education.
