The Department of Russian Language and Literature was established in 1995, partly in response to the growing trade between Russia and the Far East. The admission quota of the undergraduate program is 30, and there are currently more than 120 students. In 2000, the Master’s degree program was established at the graduate school, and its first students were accepted in the fall semester of that same year. Undergraduate and graduate students of the department strive to become the talents required by society, with the educational objective of the department being the development of experts in Northern regions who are equipped with both theoretical and practical knowledge.

The department offers practical speaking courses that include instruction by native speakers, courses on Russian literature (which is recognized around the world for its merit), basic and advanced Russian language courses, and diverse and useful courses on regional studies, including Russian history, politics, economy, society, culture, and folklore.

Graduates of the department have a diverse range of vocational options, including careers in companies that trade with Russia, the media, the civil service, the financial sector, employees dispatched to Russia, teaching, freelance translation and interpretation, and tour guides. Some graduates continue their studies at graduate school. As there are more than 500 small and medium-sized companies in Korea that trade with Russia, undergraduate students can find many opportunities for translation and interpretation work, which can be connected to future job opportunities.
