The Department of History has itself a long history, since it was established in 1946, when PNU was first opened. As such, the history of the department is aligned with the history of PNU. History serves as a compass, providing us with the knowledge and wisdom of the past. However, it is more than simply a study of the past, as it provides us with a useful outlook for the future of human society, based on the lessons we can learn from the past. In this sense, history is in fact an area of study that looks forward, rather than backward. The Department aims to produce graduates who are armed with the attitude and capabilities required in the real world, and who can fulfill the future needs of society. The curriculum can be broadly divided into Korean history, Oriental history, and Western history, and the department offers courses that are segmented by period and area, enabling students to their major according to their aptitudes and interests. For more in-depth studies, students can attend the Master’s and the Doctorate degree programs. The department also offers diverse practical sessions, such as annual field trips and rubbed copy practices, enabling students to take a diversified approach to the study of history and develop field knowledge. In particular, the department operates regular overseas field trips to broaden students’ views of the world. Students of the department acquire expert knowledge through in-depth major courses, and improve their foreign language skills through courses on the reading of English, Chinese characters, Chinese, and Japanese, making them qualified to serve in diverse sectors after graduation.
