The Department of Archaeology was established at PNU in 1989, as the first department dedicated to pure archaeological studies. The admission quota of the department is 27, and the department operates Master’s and Doctorate degree programs through its graduate school. Archaeological studies aim to restore and research human history and the cultures of entire periods and regions, based on the study of archaeological remains. The Department of Archaeology of PNU was producing excellent archaeologists before it was separated from the Department of History, and has already gained a reputation in Korea and abroad for its significant contributions to archaeological research. Archaeology majors are broadly divided into prehistoric archaeology and historic archaeology. Students not only attend archaeological courses but also take a diverse range of supplementary courses, including history, anthropology, art history, craftwork history, and epigraphy, to better achieve the goals of archaeological studies. As archaeology requires both academic research and continuous outdoor research activities, such as the excavation of remains, students must develop a cooperative spirit and interpersonal skills. In addition, as students are required to directly handle remains and archaeological materials, they must learn how to observe and analyze s. Archaeology is the most useful area of science for the exploration and understanding of human beings.
