Just as the poem says, ‘A person who doesn’t know that the blue sea was created for whales will never know true love,’ there are many people in this world who are having hard times, not remembering that the world exists for each and every person.

There are many people in this world who do not know how to break out of their shell and come out to the world, or who may just not want to break out of their shell, and who isolate themselves.

The Department of Social Welfare aims to help those people escape from their own shells, and realize that they are whales in the sea.

Social Welfare is a collective effort to create a world in which everyone leads a dignified life.

The Department of Social Work was established by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1970. It was transferred to the College of Law in 1971, and its name was changed to the Department of Social Welfare in 1979. The department was transferred to the College of Social Science in 1982.

The faculty members of the department are 8 professors who have acquired Master’s degrees or Ph.D.s at renowned universities in Korea and abroad, and are undertaking diverse research and social activities for the development of the nation’s social welfare system. The majors of the department are classified into Social Welfare Policy, and Social Welfare Practice. Both programs aim to develop talented and professional social workers through social welfare case studies, and to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations.

The major of Social Welfare Policy covers the policies, systems, administrative systems, and laws and regulations related to health insurance, national pension, minimum income requirements, industrial accident compensation insurance, employment insurance, general welfare, seniors’ welfare, women’s welfare, and welfare for the disabled. The program aims to develop social welfare policies and systems that are tailored to suit the nation’s conditions, through a comparison with the policies and systems of advanced nations.

The major of Social Welfare Practice covers professional social welfare services, which must successfully address the needs and the issues of individuals, groups, and local communities through the intervention of experts, in response to changes in society. The program provides instruction in professional skills and theories related to individual social work for individuals, group social work for groups, and local community welfare and social services for local communities.
