Library, Archive and Information Studies is a -science that combines Library Science, Information Science, and Bibliography. The Department of Library, Archive and Information Studies of Pusan National University has produced approximately 40 graduates per year since it was established by the College of Social Science in 1984. Graduates of the department work as information experts in a wide range of organizations, including libraries, information centers, repositories, news agencies, financial institutions, companies, government agencies, and NGOs. Some graduates have advanced into other areas by combining their knowledge of archiving and information gained at the department with knowledge in a related area. The department has generated talented researchers by establishing a Master’s program in 1989 and a Ph.D. program in 1991. In addition, a Ph.D. program for librarian education was established at the Graduate School of Education in 2000, and a cooperative program (Master’s and Ph.D. courses) of record management has been operated since 2000. The librarian educational program offers life-long education for workers, while the cooperative program for record management aims to train experts in record management. The graduate program of the department has a history of about 20 years. Faculty members and students have promoted positivistic views ideal for the society and the field by establishing a “Collaborating Space,” an academic community of faculty and students, and have undertaken research and publication activities that are gaining attention, both in Korea and abroad.
