Statistics is a pragmatic discipline that conducts research into statistical survey techniques and various methodologies of statistical analysis, and utilizes the findings in real life. By making a correct decision based on an accurate analysis of empirical data, statistics has entrenched itself as an indispensable area of study in today’s complex society. The Department of Statistics branched off from the Department of Computer Science and Statistics in 1988. It plays a pivotal role as the leader in statistics in the Busan and South Gyeongsang region, as it offers both Master’s and Ph.D. courses.

The educational goal of the Department is to teach basic concepts, theoretical background, and statistical survey and analysis methods so that students can play a leading role in decision-making by working with the diverse statistical information demanded by contemporary society, as well as to foster professional scientists and engineers who will lead our future society.

Upon graduation, statistics majors can work at government institutions such as the Korea National Statistical Office, or may process and analyze statistics at private sector companies such as banks, securities companies, and insurance companies. If students earn statistics-related certificates such as the Social Research Analyst Certificate, the Quality Management Engineer Certificate, or the Information Processing Engineer Certificate, it will further help them to win jobs, and they will be able to take on important tasks related to quality management at companies, or customer marketing initiatives. This is because companies can maximize profits by effectively reflecting the useful information acquired from their massive databases in their decision-making processes. As the demand for professionals needed for tasks such as these is expected to grow, the career prospects for statistics majors are very bright.
