The modern conveniences that we enjoy today can be attributed to the magnificent developments of the electronic industries, such as ICT, semiconductors, and computers, as well as state-of-the-art industries such as the aerospace, aviation, bio-environment, and energy industries. These cutting-edge industries have been driven by the development of new materials and the advancement of materials science and engineering. As industries become more advanced, the demand and importance of materials science and engineering will only grow in the years to come. At the School of Materials Science and Engineering, 16 faculty members offer education and conduct research in the fields of information and communication materials, high-performance structural materials, and material processing. The ive of the school is to foster capable scientists and engineers who are equipped with scholastic literacy,?a wide range of knowledge in all areas of materials science (llic material, inorganic material, etc.) and the latest technologies. The information and communication materials field applies knowledge of various electronic communications parts, fiber optic components, sensors, and energy conversion devices by understanding and controlling the electronic, magnetic, optical, thermal, and chemical properties of the materials, including electronic materials and semiconductor materials. The structural material field involves the application of research to develop light-weight, strong, temperature-resistant materials by first understanding the mechanical properties of the materials and then controlling or improving these properties through crystal structure, micro structure, manufacturing process, etc. Material processing deals with all stages of processing, from?raw material synthesis and refining to production of materials or elements, so that people can utilize various properties of the materials in engineering. This includes correction, circuit design, sinter and treatment, single crystal, thin-film manufacturing, surface treatment of materials, etc. Materials Engineering is the basis of all engineering fields. In the 21st century, a high level of cutting-edge engineering is essential to the development of new materials. For Korean industrial products to achieve global competitiveness, it is important to develop or improve materials, and for this reason it is urgent to accumulate domestic technologies in materials and to foster highly qualified human resources. The School of?Materials Science and Engineering at Pusan National University has a rich history and tradition spanning more than 35 years, and has played a critical role as the cradle of outstanding experts and high-level technologies in the field of the materials demanded by the industrial belts in Gyeongsang Province and in the rest of Korea. l Engineering graduates work for a wide range of industries, from infrastructure-related industries including the steel industry, to automobile industries at the industrial belts in Southeast Asia, and electronic materials and new materials industries. Inorganic Material Engineering graduates have worked as engineers or researchers in various industries, from the semiconductor industry to the electric/electronic industry, the precise machinery/aerospace industry, the optic communication/information materials industry and the environmental materials industry. The School of?Materials Science and Engineering is currently implementing the Brain Korea 21 (BK21) project, and has operated the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK) system since 2005. In 2008, the \"State-of-the-art Transportation System, Parts and Materials\" project was ed as a specialization project under the leadership of the School of?Materials Science and Engineering, with funding from the government.
