Industrial Engineering is a branch of science that studies the techniques used in analyzing, designing, improving, and operating a comprehensive system made up of human beings, commodities (materials), and facilities. As a discipline, its aim is to comprehensively maximize efficiency by combining the knowledge and technologies of natural sciences and social sciences with the principles and methodologies of analysis and design in engineering, in order to identify, predict, and evaluate the outcome of a comprehensive system. In other words, Industrial Engineering applies metrics and rational thinking to the business management of the manufacturing process to enhance productivity, and consequently optimizes the planning, management, and design of a production system based on the knowledge of engineering and numerical management. In particular, with the rapid automation and informatization of industry and other parts of society, there is an urgent need to design integrated computer systems using components such as automation facilities, computers, database, LAN, etc., and to develop and research technologies that can efficiently manage and operate these integrated systems. This is why industrial engineering is gaining attention as a cutting-edge field of study for the new era. The Department of Industrial Engineering at Pusan National University was established in 1985. Its faculty members include eight professors and one chair-professor. Areas of research include production systems and automation, management science, production and logistics management, information systems and computer applications. Industrial Engineering is applied in virtually all areas of modern industry, including manufacturing, distribution, ICT, and service sectors. Graduates are playing an active role in industries, academia, and research institutes, and also move on to pursue further studies at graduate schools such as Pusan National University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Seoul National University, and others. Industrial Engineering graduates can continue to various fields and choose careers that suit their aptitudes and interests. They can take on jobs related to manufacturing, finance, planning at ICT industries, technology research, R&D, materials, logistics, production management, process management, price management, sales management, quality guarantee, quality business management, quality management, and information system management. Indeed, the number of fields that utilize Industrial Engineering is continuously increasing. The department produced its first graduates in 1989. Over the 20 years since, graduates have joined prominent companies such as Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Motors, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Steel, LG Chem, LG Display, LG Electronics, LG CNS, Samsung Electronics, Samsung Heavy Industries, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung SDS, Samsung Thales, Samsung SDI,?DSME, Daewoo Information Systems, Doosan Heavy Industries, Doosan Infracore, STX Heavy Industries, Hyosung Heavy Industries, and POSCO, where they are valued for their expertise.
