The Department Mathematics Education was established in 1969, and has served as the birthplace for many capable mathematics teachers. The characteristics required for mathematics teachers can be defined as follows. First, they must have an expert knowledge in the contents and the flow of the mathematics educational curriculum of middle and high schools. Second, they must be equipped with a comprehensive and in-depth level of knowledge in diverse areas of mathematics. Third, they are required to understand the latest methodologies of mathematics education, including approaches to developing the mathematical creativity and problem-solving skills of students.
To develop the above-mentioned capability, students of the department are required to complete the courses in the subject matter education, such as algebra and analytics; pedagogical courses in the teachable subject such as the theory of mathematics education; and general education courses such as general education theory and education practice. The department has produced more than 1600 graduates, who have served as mathematics teachers, educational administrators, and educational experts in middle schools, high schools, educational offices, and universities. The department also operates a Master’s program at the Graduate School of Education, and Master’s and the Doctorate programs at general graduate schools.
