Department Overview

The Department of Dance was established in 1983 in order to develop experts in dance. The department offers a program that will help students to improve their understanding of dance and creativity, as well as to develop the professional knowledge and teaching skills that will enable them to become both excellent dancers and dance instructors. The department has played a leading role in improving the professionalism in the field of dance in Korea. The graduate program was added in 1996, and the department’s six faculty members have significantly contributed to the development of dance through steady research efforts. They are currently engaged both in domestic and overseas performances and in research activities.

Curriculum

The curriculum of the Department of Dance aims to give students a basic knowledge of dance, enabling them to expand the scope of their theoretical study and practice through research into the diverse art forms related to dance, including music, fine arts, Korean music, art direction, and acting. Students of the department complete a program consisting of 132 credits: 30 credits in cultural subjects, 96 credits in major subjects, and 6 credits in elective subjects. Majors include Korean Dance, Modern Dance, and Ballet. Students majoring in Korean Dance learn the way that Korean traditional dance has been developed, and how Korean dance can be maintained and developed by reflecting modern culture and emotions. Students majoring in Ballet are taught the theoretical background to the history and global trends of ballet, and develop their ballet skills through bar movements for classical ballet techniques, as well as sessions to develop their artistic sensibilities and understanding of formations. The curriculum of the Ballet Major is an ideal education for professional ballet dancers. Students majoring in Modern Dance learn how to express the energy of dance by escaping from existing dance techniques, and have opportunities to develop Korean modern dance through participation in domestic and overseas workshops and festivals.
