The Department of Animal Science aims to produce food with high added-value, produce economically beneficial animals, develop food materials, and pursue the co-existence of animals and humans through the convergence of traditional animal sciences and advanced bio-technology. The ultimate goal of the department is to maximize the added-value of animal resources, and improve quality of life through animal-friendly methodologies.
The Department of Animal Science was selected as “PNU-SABC” by Pusan National University in 2006, and it has focused on education and research with the vision of pioneering special animal science with high added-value by developing a new road map.
The department undertakes research for the improvement and breeding of animals with economic value, more efficient breeding, improvement of characteristics, and an improved system of economic nutrition management that utilizes advanced bioengineering technology. The department also strives to develop and advance theories and technology for the improvement of the nutritional value of animal-based foods; and food processing. Students of the department take basic courses such as Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Statistics, Genetics, Physiology, Molecular Biology, and Cell Culture, and applied courses such as Dietetics, Feed Science, Animal Breeding, Plant Breeding, Food Process Engineering, Dairy Science, and Special Animal Production, which can be directly applied to industrial purposes. The curriculum of the department also includes advanced applied biotechnology courses, such as Vital Functions.
Graduates of the department can pursue careers at large corporations such as Agri Brands Purina Korea, TS Corporation, CJ, Samyang Corporation, and Woosung Food; bioengineering companies; research institutes such as the National Institute of Animal Science, the Research Institute for Veterinary Science, and the Food Science Institute; Nonghyup; the Korea Racing Authority; meat processing companies such as Lotte Ham, Harim, and Dongwon; dairy food companies including Seoulmilk, Namyang Dairy Products, Maeil Dairies, and Busan Milk; centers of agricultural technology; public organizations; schools as 2nd class teachers; graduate schools; overseas graduate schools; research institutes of pharmaceutical firms; Animal Products Grading Service; livestock quarantine offices; Korea Poultry Association; Korea Swine Association; Hanwoo Association; Animal Improvement Association; and zoos like Samsung Everland.
