BET is created through the convergence of BT and ET, and is regarded as a key strategic area for the nation. The department aims to generate human resources who will lead the future of science through education and research on the production and application of functional biomaterials; the restoration of the ecosystem; life science and plant medicine; and the quality assessment of agricultural products.

The curriculum of the department includes applied biochemistry courses such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Science, Plant Genomics, Natural Products Science, Microbiology and Fermentation Technology, as well as life science and environmental chemistry courses such as Soil Chemistry, Environmental & Ecological Chemistry, Pesticide Chemistry, Plant Medicine, and Pathology, with the aim of providing students with an understanding of life and biomaterials, and industrial applications.

Graduates of the department can work for the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology; the Ministry of Environment; the Korea Food and Drug Administration; the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Family Affairs; the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries; and other government agencies such as the Rural Development Administration, the National Quarantine Station, the National Plant Quarantine Service, and the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service; international organizations related to agriculture; public organizations; research institutes; and businesses specialized in foods, agrichemical, chemical, and pharmaceutical products. Graduates of the department can also study at ordinary graduate schools and special graduate schools of medicine, dentistry, and oriental medicine.

The Master’s and Doctoral Programs were established in the department in order to further educate talented graduates who are equipped with competitiveness. Students of the Graduate Program are required to develop their basic and applied capabilities based on academic understanding and research on bioresources; gain expert knowledge required by businesses through theoretical education and experiments on applied bioresources; and acquire diverse certificates, including foreign language certificates. The Graduate School also actively operates diverse educational programs for specialization, field education, and informatization.
