Biotechnology (BT) is a relatively new field that is rapidly developing. Biomaterials are materials that are acceptable to living tissue, and which can be used to provide functional or structural support to the living organism. They have increasingly varied applications in medicine and dentistry. The Department of Biomaterials Science teaches students about the science and practical application of the functional organic and inorganic materials that can be applied to living bodies and to living materials, which can help the physiological environment. The department was established to develop students who can actively respond to the technological developments of future biotech industries. The department participates in the research and development of medical, pharmaceutical, bio, and eco-friendly materials and related technologies based on the convergence of biotechnology and material engineering technology, and pursues education and research on future-oriented converged technology in which BT, NT, and ET are combined. Undergraduate and graduate students develop theoretical knowledge and problem-solving skills through intensive coursework and research activities, and acquire broad field knowledge and a global sensibility through field trips to domestic and overseas research facilities, special lectures delivered by renowned experts, and internship programs at the top research institutes. Curriculum The curriculum of the department was designed to enable students to play a leading role in scientific circles in the future by acquiring a knowledge of natural biomaterials and functional biomaterials, and by converging the related technology with strategic technologies for national development, including BT, ET, and NT. The curriculum includes courses such as Biomaterial Science, Cell Culture, Biotechnology, Medical Polymers, Molecular Biology, Bio Sensors, Natural Polymers, and Plasma-Assisted Chemicals. Post-Graduation Career With the knowledge and capability they have gained in their university studies, graduates of the department contribute to the development of science and technology; the development of new products with high added value; and the creation of new industries, as biomaterial experts at domestic and overseas universities, research institutes, and businesses. They can also continue their studies at special graduate schools of medicine and oriental medicine, based on their basic knowledge of bio science. Graduate Program The Graduate School of Biomaterials offers further training and in-depth research with the purpose of developing the professional skills required for the development, manufacture, and evaluation of biomaterials. Students of the graduate school participate in research and development projects relating to diverse high-tech organic and inorganic matters, biomaterials, diagnosis, and industrial materials. In order to generate experts for businesses and research institutes, the graduate school enables students to acquire the professional knowledge and scientific technology required for areas involving gel polymers, separation membranes, immunology, advanced biopolymers for tissue engineering, plasma science, and nano biomaterials. Graduates of the program join businesses, research institutes attached to businesses, public and national research institutes, as well as government-contributed research institutes.
